Work-Life Balance: The Joke's on Us

Written by Susan Jenks | 16 February, 2023

We all want it, we all need it, but let's be real, achieving a perfect balance between our work and personal lives is about as likely as finding a four-leaf clover in a field of concrete.  Let's be honest, the reason why work-life balance is so difficult to achieve is because the 9-5 grind is like a game of Whack-A-Mole. Just when we think we've got it under control and are living our best life, work pops up and taunting us to whack it back down.

But hey, let's not get too down in the dumps about it. After all, laughter is the best medicine, right?  So, in the spirit of keeping things light and funny, let's talk about work-life balance and why it's absolutely not possible.

Achieving a balance between work and life is difficult for a multitude of reasons, but let's dive into some of the most common ones.

First, there's the ever-growing list of responsibilities. We have work, household chores, personal errands, and not to mention trying to maintain some sort of social life. It can feel like there just aren't enough hours in the day to get everything done, and that's before we even factor in things like self-care and exercise. And don't even get us started on the never-ending to-do lists. Just when we cross off one task, two more appear in its place. It's like a never-ending cycle of "work, work, work." It's enough to make us want to just throw in the towel and live like a hermit, surrounded by nothing but our own thoughts and a lifetime supply of snacks.

Next, there's the impact of technology. We're now connected to work 24/7 thanks to our smartphones and laptops, and it can be tough to disconnect and unwind when we're constantly being bombarded with work emails and calls outside of regular working hours. It's a never-ending cycle, and it can be tough to turn off. Technology has made us constantly connected, which can be both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, technology has made it easier for us to stay in touch with friends and family, no matter where we are in the world. On the other hand, it can also make it tough to disconnect and unwind. We're bombarded with notifications and messages, and it can be tempting to check our phones and email even when we're supposed to be relaxing.

Furthermore, technology has also changed the way we consume media and entertainment. Instead of reading a book or watching a movie, we now spend much of our free time scrolling through social media, which can be both time-consuming and emotionally draining. And let's not forget the impact of technology on our sleep. The blue light emitted by screens can disrupt our circadian rhythms and make it harder to fall and stay asleep, leading to feelings of exhaustion and burnout.

Being a freelancer and working from home can make finding a balance between work and life even more challenging.  The freedom to set their own schedules and work from anywhere can be a double-edged sword. For starters, the lines between work and home are now more blurred than ever. It's easy to fall into the trap of working longer hours, especially since the office is now just a few steps away, and it can be tough to disconnect and switch off from work mode. On one hand, it allows for greater flexibility, but on the other, it can be tempting to work around the clock and never truly disconnect from work. Freelancers may also struggle to set boundaries with clients and say no to additional projects, leading to overwork and burnout. Without the structure of a traditional office environment, it can be harder to separate work and personal time, making it especially important for all remote workers to make a conscious effort to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Then, there's the societal pressure to always be working. Societal pressure can be a significant obstacle when it comes to finding a balance between work and life. We live in a culture that glorifies busyness and working long hours, and it can be tough to take a step back and prioritize our personal lives when we're constantly being told that work should come first.

This pressure can come from various sources, including our bosses, colleagues, and even friends and family. It can be easy to fall into the trap of working longer hours, even when we're not at our most productive, because we feel like we need to prove ourselves or keep up with those around us. This constant pressure can lead to feelings of stress and burnout, and it can be tough to find time for self-care, relaxation, and spending time with loved ones.

Finally, there's the issue of work-life spillover. When work starts to impact our personal lives, and vice versa, it can be difficult to find that balance. We may feel guilty for taking time off when we have a deadline looming, or we may be so stressed from work that we can't enjoy our time off. It's a vicious cycle that can be tough to break.

Contrary to popular belief, work-life balance may not necessarily be achievable.

It's a common misconception that work-life balance means dividing our time equally between work and personal life, but in reality, this can be challenging and often unrealistic. Instead of striving for an even split between work and personal life, it's more about delegating time to what's most important to us at any given moment. It's all about finding what works best for us as individuals and making the effort to stick to it.

It might mean setting boundaries with work and saying no to extra responsibilities, or it might mean being more intentional about finding time for the things that bring us joy and happiness outside of work. Everyone's priorities are different, and what works for one person may not work for another.  For example, someone who's starting a family may prioritize their personal life over work, while someone who's pursuing a demanding career may prioritize work over personal life. We may also prioritize work more heavily when we're trying to meet a deadline, and then shift our focus to personal life when we're on vacation. It's not about finding a static balance, but rather, it's about being flexible and adapting to the demands of our lives. The key is to be mindful of our priorities and to delegate our time accordingly, so we can focus on what matters most.

Work-life balance may be almost impossible, but it's good to find some humor in the struggles that we face. And, it's one that's worth fighting for if we want to live a happy and fulfilled life. By being mindful of our priorities and being flexible, we can ensure that we're dedicating time to what matters most to us, and living our lives to the fullest.
