Weekly Goals: A Freelancer's Roadmap to Success

Written by Sierra Scott | 20 March, 2023

As a freelance professional, setting goals is essential to achieving success and staying motivated. In this blog post, we'll explain why setting weekly goals is critical for a successful freelance career and provide some tips on how to set effective goals. So, let's dive in!

First, let's talk about why setting goals is so crucial.  As a freelancer, you don't have a boss to tell you what to do or how to do it. You are your own boss, which means you're responsible for managing your time, your projects, and your income.  Without clear goals, it's easy to lose sight of what you're working toward and become unfocused.

That's where weekly goals come in.

By setting weekly goals, you create a roadmap for your week and a clear vision of what you want to achieve. You give yourself a sense of direction, purpose, and motivation. Instead of feeling overwhelmed or aimless, you feel empowered and in control.

But setting goals is only half the battle. The key to achieving your goals is to make them SMART goals.

SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

Let's break that down:

  • Specific: Your goal should be clear and specific. Instead of saying, "I want to get more clients," say, "I want to land two new clients this week."
  • Measurable: Your goal should be measurable so that you can track your progress. Instead of saying, "I want to improve my writing skills," say, "I want to write two blog posts this week and get feedback from a writing mentor."
  • Achievable: Your goal should be achievable within the given time frame. Be realistic about what you can accomplish in a week, given your workload and other commitments.
  • Relevant: Your goal should be relevant to your overall business objectives. Don't waste time on tasks that don't contribute to your long-term goals.
  • Time-bound: Your goal should have a deadline. Without a deadline, you're less likely to prioritize it and more likely to procrastinate.

Now that we've established what SMART goals are, let's talk about how to set them.

Here are some tips:

  1. Start by identifying your long-term business goals. What do you want to achieve in the next year, five years, or ten years?
  2. Break down those long-term goals into smaller, actionable tasks. What do you need to do this week to move closer to your long-term goals?
  3. Prioritize your goals based on urgency and importance. What needs to be done first, and what can wait?
  4. Be realistic about what you can accomplish in a week. Don't overload yourself with too many tasks.
  5. Write your goals down and keep them visible. This will remind you of what you're working toward and keep you accountable.

Now, you may be thinking: "That all sounds great, but how do I stay motivated to achieve my goals?" That's where the power of visualization comes in. Visualization is a technique used by top athletes, business leaders, and performers to achieve success. It involves imagining yourself achieving your goals and feeling the emotions associated with that success.

Here's how to use visualization to achieve your weekly goals:

  1. Close your eyes and imagine yourself achieving your goal. Visualize yourself completing your tasks and feeling proud of your accomplishments.
  2. Focus on the emotions associated with achieving your goal. How will you feel when you've completed your tasks? What will it mean for your business?
  3. Repeat this visualization exercise every morning before starting your workday. This will set a positive tone for your day and keep you motivated.

In addition to visualization, accountability is also a powerful motivator. Find an accountability partner or join a mastermind group to share your goals and progress with. This will keep you accountable and provide support when you need it.

Finally, celebrate your wins. When you achieve your weekly goals, take a moment to celebrate your accomplishments. Reward yourself with something you enjoy, like a special treat or a fun activity. Celebrating your wins will reinforce your motivation and make you feel good about your progress.

Setting weekly goals is essential for a successful freelance career. It provides direction, purpose, and motivation, and helps you stay focused on your long-term goals. By making your goals SMART, prioritizing them, visualizing your success, and holding yourself accountable, you can achieve your goals and create the freelance career you desire. Remember to celebrate your wins along the way, and keep pushing yourself to reach new heights.
